D!Sousuke x M!Reader x Son!Haru - (Water) Surprise

“Haru, Sousuke! Breakfast is ready!”

Your voice rang throughout the house, followed by two sets of footsteps rushing down the stairs. Haru rushed in first, sitting in his chair and picking up his special dolphin chopsticks to eat his meal. Sousuke followed soon after, muttering a ‘good morning’ before making a fresh batch of coffee.

“What’s got you so ruffled up? It’s not even 10.” You teased, earning you an unamused look from your husband. “Work. It’s always work,” Sousuke sighed. He’d been working overtime for the past few days as there was so much paperwork to take care of. Not to mention the numerous cases involving a suspected “bird-man” that had been popping out of nowhere. The joys of being a police officer, he assumed.

“Ah. Well,” you leaned close to whisper in Sousuke’s ear, “I have a surprise later, so could you come home early today? It’s very important.” Sousuke quirked an eyebrow, but you put a finger over your mouth, telling him to keep quiet.

What on earth have you been planning?

“Bye Haru-chan!” Haru waved to Makoto as you drove off. You swore that Makoto (and perhaps you) was the only person allowed to call Haru by the nickname; any other person would have a death glare thrown their way.

“How was school today?” You chirped. Haru nodded, saying they made arts and crafts with the preschool kids. He made a dolphin out of pipe cleaners. He also had the unfortunate task to help one of the preschoolers, specifically a little fireball who wouldn’t shut up about otters and beetles.

“Well I have a surprise waiting for you at home!” Haru’s eyes widened. “Is it a dolphin?” You chuckled, “Maybe~” The rest of the ride home was filled with questions about the supposed dolphin. “Is it blue? No, wait! Is it grey?!” You had never seen Haru so excited before!

Now you felt bad that you hadn’t gotten him a dolphin. But then again, where would you keep it?

“Where is Iru?” Haru questioned you as you entered the house. In the short ride home, he had managed to give the dolphin a name and plan all the games they would play together. You bent down to his level. “Sorry, but there is no dolphin.” Haru’s excited expression faltered. “But! I have a different surprise for you!” Just then, Sousuke entered the house. “Perfect timing!” You exclaimed, pulling him into the next room and placing a medium-sized box in his hands. “Don’t drop it, ok?” Sousuke nodded slowly, while you went into the other room. Sousuke followed, and held the box awkwardly. Was there something… moving in here?

“Go ahead, open it!” You grinned. Hesitant, Haru took off the lid.

To both Haru and Sousuke’s shock, there was a puppy inside!

“A puppy?!” Haru looked at you, as if asking for permission to touch the small animal. You nodded and he petted it gently, his eyes widening in amazement. Sousuke, on the other hand, was flabbergasted that you had actually bought a pet. Who was going to take care of it?

You left Haru and the puppy, who he had affectionately named Iruka (after his non-existent dolphin), to play outside. Sousuke was still trying to process the change. You went up to hug him, hoping he wasn’t thinking of returning the dog.

“It’s just… We’d have to spend a lot of time caring for it, and-“ You put a finger on his lips. “I know, but we’re in this together, you know? I think we could even have another kid now-“ Sousuke gave you an incredulous look. “Another kid?! Now’s not the right time for another, especially with the dog and my work and-“

“…You don’t get to choose when.”
